One of the most famous areas of Hampstead is Hampstead Heath. This ancient heath land is an oasis in the city and draws many visitors to experience its 800 acres of glorious woodland, heath land, meadows and glades. It is a rich habitat for many species and you can see kingfishers, woodpeckers and a whole host of birds and butterflies sharing the heath with you. Despite its popularity, it's not hard to find a corner of the heath to enjoy to yourself and many areas boast stunning views across London.
If you love Hampstead Heath then Hyde Park is also very close. The historic Hyde Park offers its visitors 350 acres of some of the finest landscapes in London. You can walk, cycle or even roller blade through the park and visit the famous Speakers Corner.
Nearby Kensington is home to many of the city's greatest museums. The Victoria and Albert museum houses clothing and costumes from throughout the ages. The Science museum is a popular choice for young children where they can enjoy the interactive exhibits and have both a fun and educational visit. When you have finished marvelling at its outstandingly beautiful architecture, you will discover huge dinosaur skeletons, fossils and much more. Each of these museums also hosts regular exhibitions and events so it is worth checking their schedules before your stay.
One of the trendiest areas of London is a very short distance from Hampstead. Notting Hill is packed full of designer boutiques, chic bars and upmarket restaurants. It is a great place to see and be seen in and a perfect place for celebrity spotting. If you arrive in the city in August, you can witness the great Notting Hill carnival here with its lively celebration of ethnic diversity.
Notting Hill is also home to Portobello Market, arguably one of the greatest markets in London and certainly one of the most popular. This mile-long street is home to a fantastic fresh fruit and vegetable market on weekdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, a clothing market appears here offering fashionable clothing, both new and second hand. However, the most popular day to visit Portobello Market is on Saturdays when the antiques market is in full flow. This is the market's busiest day with people flocking to view the gorgeous antiques on display and trying to pick up a bargain.
